Install Office 365 on a Personal Device
This document provides instructions on how to install Office 365 on a personal device, for students and staff. Office 365 can be installed on Windows or Mac OS based devices.
1. Make sure you do not have any older versions or trial versions of Office installed on your computer. If you do, we strongly recommend that these programs are uninstalled before installing Office 365. Uninstalling these programs will not remove any existing Word, Excel, or other Office-based documents.

2. Login to your Western email account:
- Students - Go to www.westerntc.edu, click on the Current Students link at the top of the page, click on the Email link and login to your Western student email account.
- Staff – Go to https://intranet.westerntc.edu/ and enter your login credentials. Click on the Email link at the top of the page, and login using your Western staff email address.

4. Click on the Office 365 link. 

5. Click the Install Office link located on the right side, and select the Office 365 Apps option.

6. The setup file is usually downloaded to your Downloads folder for most web browsers.
7. After the file has been downloaded, the installation should start. If it doesn’t start, navigate to the location of the downloaded file and follow the steps shown in the window that pops up. If you need assistance with the install, click the Need Help Installing? link at the bottom of the window.

8. When you activate your installation, use your Western email credentials.
9. To retain the Office 365 activation, your device needs to be connected to the internet to check-in at least once every 30 days.
10. You may install Office 365 on five personal devices.
11. Office 365 includes the following applications:
- For Windows based systems: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, Access, Skype for Business and OneDrive for Business
- For Mac OS based systems: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote
